John Costumbrado, M.D. ’17 is COMMUNITY. He is one of our 40 Under 40 2022 recipients. Costumbrado was part of UCR School of Medicine's inaugural class and is now an assistant clinical professor in the medical school. While serving as a resident at the Riverside Community Hospital/UC Riverside Emergency Medicine program, he played an active role in improving the health of the local community. He is now an Emergency Medicine Physician at Vituity.

The Mission of the UCR school of medicine is to improve the health of the people of California and, especially, to serve Inland Southern California by training a diverse workforce of physicians…[mission statement of UCR School of Medicine]

John Costumbrado, M.D. ’17 is living this mission. As a graduate of the inaugural medical school class at UCR, he ensured he stayed in the area to make a difference. Now, in Emergency Medicine, he is living his calling by working in a diverse medical field and working with underrepresented and underserved on a regular basis.

The need for physicians in the Inland Empire was at a critical low in the mid 2010’s and the UCR School of Medicine was a great and much needed addition. The concept of having a medical school in the area to then serve in the local community was missing and UCR delivered.

Originally from Los Angeles, Costumbrado jumped at the opportunity to be a part of something from the ground up with the medical school. While serving as a resident at the Riverside Community Hospital/UC Riverside Emergency Medicine program, he played an active role in improving the health of the local community. After his residency, he saw the impact his work made and was honored to have the opportunity to stay in the area to treat patients.

Now as a respected and well-known emergency medicine physician within the Inland Southern California, Costumbrado also takes on the role of Assistant Clinical Professor for the UCR School of Medicine where he leads students achieve their own dreams of working in medicine.

Costumbrado has served the Inland Empire now for 6 years and was honored as one of UC Riverside's 40 Under 40 in 2022.
