Shayla Nguyen doesn’t remember her near-death experience. But without the miracle of modern medicine, the outcome for Shayla and her mother might have been different.

During labor, the doctor discovered Shayla's mother had vasa previa, putting both of their lives at risk. Thankfully, they both survived. But that experience became the driving force behind her decision to pursue a career in medicine. As a future healthcare professional, Shayla hopes to pay it forward and help communities in need.

Shayla is majoring in biology and plans to attend medical school. She is exploring opportunities in programs such as the Medical Scholars Program, HOSA for Future Health Professionals, and Dynamic Genome Lab, which will provide valuable professional experience. Shayla is also a recipient of the 2022-23 Dr. Manuela and Mr. Randy Sosa Scholarship Fund Endowment Scholarship.
