NARRATIVE 

Paying It Forward: The Miracle of Healthcare 

Shayla Nguyen doesn’t remember her near-death experience. But without the miracle of medicine, it’s highly likely that she wouldn’t be here today. During labor, Shayla’s mother was diagnosed with vasa previa, putting both of their lives in danger. With this knowledge, she decided to pursue healthcare to give back and pass on the life-saving miracles of medicine.  

 Shayla is majoring in biology and plans to attend medical school. She is exploring opportunities in programs such as the Medical Scholars Program and HOSA for Future Health Professionals, which will provide valuable experience for her career. She was also a recipient of the 2022-23 Dr. Manuela and Mr. Randy Sosa Scholarship Fund Endowment Scholarship.

  • After surviving a near-death experience at birth, Shayla used that knowledge to attend UC Riverside as a biology major. At UCR, Shayla has access to programs and organizations that will offer valuable hands-on experience and set her up for success so she can pass on the miracle of healthcare to other communities. 

  • Through the miracle of healthcare, Shayla’s life was changed from the moment she was born. After she and her mother survived a dangerous labor complication, Shayla became a biology major and decided to pursue a career in medicine. Just as that life-saving experience shaped her future, an education at UC Riverside is helping students shape their paths and succeed in their goals.
