Traveling the Distance for Higher Education
Being alone in a new country would be difficult for anyone, but for Sheila Abdolmanafi, her determination to study at UC Riverside and work in healthcare made it all worth it. In high school, she worked as a medical assistant, igniting her interest in medicine. Following her acceptance to UCR, Sheila made the decision to move from Iran to the United States and study biology. This presented the unique challenge of being in an unfamiliar country and not having family nearby. Still, Sheila continued to stay focused on her education to achieve her goals.
After completing her B.A. in biology, Sheila plans to attend the School of Medicine to become an oncologist physician and work in underserved communities. Her involvement at UCR as a neurology student researcher, chemotherapy research fellow, and medical assistant has given her valuable experiences that will prepare her for a future in medicine.
